The Long Run, coming soon
A new book about doing hard things, and knowing when to walk away
In May 2002, in a conference room high above Central Park, the chairman of our board said to me, "It's a beautiful day outside. Want to go for a run?" I was thirty-three, the General Counsel of a global public company, and I had never run. I said no that day, but the question changed my life.
THE LONG RUN is a personal-development memoir about doing hard things and the less-celebrated skill of knowing when to walk away. Over the twenty-five years that followed, I lost fifty pounds, became a Six Star finisher of the World Marathon Majors, and ran ultramarathons up to 100 kilometers. Then, at fifty, at the peak of my career, I walked away from the S&P 500 General Counsel role I'd held for twenty years.
Our culture sells the never-quit part of the story and is nearly silent on the walking away. Yet that is where my life got good. Told in short, self-contained chapters structured as a race, the book turns each decision into a tool readers can use in a life that has nothing to do with running.
